Why a Photo Essay?
This Photo Essay are the result of small groups of young people coming together and asking themselves what it meant to be #Connected2 to the bigger system.
Why Snap Shots?
If the Photo Essay was a book, each Snap Shop is a chapter telling stories from around the world.
This second chapter, demonstrates the relationships between communities and cattle across Ireland, Malawi, and Zimbabwe. The intention of the young people who captures these moments was to help us to understand the effects of climate change and global food systems.

Our cultures are connected in many ways by cattle. In one part of the world, the number of cattle one owns speaks to their wealth and in another part, groups are concerned about beef overproduction. This photo essay will take you through the story of cattle – their contribution to the economy, rural development, social life, and impact on the environment– across the world.

Mrs. Bandawe’s two cows are her most treasured property. She comes from an area where there is more crop than animal farming. Those that raise livestock only have a few. Some choose to feed their animals at home, others communally employ an individual who takes the animals out every day for feeding.

This image represents the overconsumption of red meat in Western Europe. In many supermarkets, healthier, more environmentally friendly options are often expensive or unavailable. Although beef production is unsustainable, many farmers do not have access to supports that would allow them to implement more sustainable practices.

Dionne’s father works in the livestock industry which involves introducing different livestock rearing techniques that encourage reproduction and growth of high-quality breeds. Through her participation in this photo essay project, she understood and appreciated that many farmers in Zimbabwe are willing to learn new and innovative ways to care for their animals. After all, healthier cattle are also more profitable.
