Stockholm, August 23, 2024 – Humanitarian aid and development agency GOAL, represented by Global WASH Advisor Alan Reade and Thies Timmermans, Project Engineer at technical innovation company Practica, will showcase the TokenTap innovation at World Water Week 2024 in Stockholm (stand 02.02). Running from Sun, August 25th to Thurs, Aug 29th, this global event will bring thousands of water resources experts from across the world together to address critical global and regional water-related challenges.

A Pioneering Solution for Water Accessibility

The TokenTap, developed through a collaboration between GOAL and Practica, is a coin-operated, low-cost hand pump dispenser that generates revenues critical for maintaining access to safe drinking water. Installed in Bugiri, Uganda, this mechanical pre-payment device allows users to collect up to 23 liters of water after inserting a token purchased from a local kiosk. This system ensures continuous access to clean water by generating income for pump maintenance.

Speaking in advance of World Water Week, Alan Reade, GOAL’s Global WASH Advisor, commented,

“The TokenTap represents a transformative approach to rural water management. It has the potential to revolutionise rural handpump sustainability, aligning with GOAL’s mission to innovate for lasting impact.”

Strategic Partnership for Broader Impact

This initiative supports the Government of Uganda’s shift from community-based maintenance to a public-private utility service model, reducing operational costs and enhancing service delivery. The successful pilot in Bugiri has demonstrated the viability of this model, with positive feedback from the local community.

Also speaking in advance of World Water Week, Thies Timmermans, Project Engineer at Practica, added,

“Working with GOAL on the TokenTap has allowed us to merge practical innovation with tangible impact. We’re excited about the potential to scale this technology and reach more communities in need.”

Looking Ahead

The success of the TokenTap in Uganda marks a significant step toward cracking the management challenge we have been facing since the 1990s. GOAL and Practica’s presence at World Water Week 2024 will spotlight this innovation and discuss scaling its reach to further improve public health and economic stability in vulnerable regions.
