As the curtain falls on Ireland’s Autumn Series following their clash with Australia on Saturday night, rugby icon Bernard Jackman calls on fans to harness the passion and energy seen throughout the series and redirect it to a vital cause—the GOAL Mile. This beloved Christmas tradition takes place in over 160 locations across Ireland and raises essential funds for GOAL’s life-saving humanitarian work around the world.
Jackman, recently announced as an Ambassador for the Irish humanitarian charity GOAL, underscored the powerful connection between the world of sport and humanitarian efforts:
“GOAL has been a pillar in Ireland’s humanitarian work for decades, and it’s incredible to see how much they’ve achieved with the support of the Irish sports community.”
“Sportspeople, fans, and communities here have consistently shown that they’re willing to rally for a good cause, and GOAL has been there for over 45 years, translating that spirit into life-changing support for communities in need.”
Reflecting on the broader significance of sport and its potential to inspire action, Jackman added:
“The connection between Irish sport and GOAL is special—it’s about channelling that dedication and passion from the field to global issues that impact us all. I really believe that when we bring people together this way, we have the potential to make a lasting impact across borders, and I’m honoured to be part of that legacy.”
While Ireland may not have clinched victory in the Autumn Series, Jackman urged fans to carry forward the unity and determination displayed throughout the tournament:
“Today and every day, we have the chance to make an impact that extends well beyond the final whistle,” said Jackman.
“Support GOAL’s work, join a GOAL Mile, and remember that by coming together, we can make a real difference in the world.”
Reflecting on the impact of the GOAL Mile, Helen McVeigh, Director of Fundraising at GOAL, said:
“Every year, the GOAL Mile unites people from all corners of Ireland in a powerful display of solidarity and generosity. This cherished Irish tradition is not only deeply meaningful for communities here at home but also has a profound ripple effect across borders, reaching those who need it most.
The funds raised through the GOAL Mile directly support GOAL’s vital work in some of the world’s most challenging regions, providing life-saving aid and hope to vulnerable communities. It’s more than a tradition—it’s a lifeline.”
The GOAL Mile, proudly supported by AIB, continues to grow as an enduring Irish tradition. Last year, it raised €630,000, providing critical support to communities facing crises across Africa, Latin America, and the Middle East. AIB has partnered with GOAL since 2004 and recently renewed its support for another three years, further solidifying the GOAL Mile as a staple of the holiday season.
Answer Bernard’s call and make a difference this Christmas by joining your local GOAL Mile or starting one in your community. Visit www.goalmile.org for more information.
