“By virtue of his belief in GOAL’s work, and his selfless contribution to the advancement of the charity, Jimmy Casey played a hugely significant role in ensuring that millions of the world’s poorest and most vulnerable people have realised their dreams and ambitions since our foundation in 1977”
Jimmy Casey, who passed away on Monday, November 5th, made an immeasurable contribution to the establishment of GOAL, and to the development and achievements of the charity over four decades.
As a co-founder of GOAL with John O’Shea in 1977, Jimmy was the charity’s first Honorary Treasurer and held that position for the next 10 years. He continued to serve as an impassioned and influential member of the GOAL Board until his retirement early last year.
In recent years, he served as Company Secretary; he chaired the Board’s Audit and Risk Committee; and played a very significant and prominent role in GOAL’s governance review. He was especially passionate about GOAL’s humanitarian work across the world and always made sure to credit the staff who he knew were working in extremely tough and demanding conditions.
“By virtue of his belief in GOAL’s work, and his selfless contribution to the advancement of the charity, Jimmy Casey played a hugely significant role in ensuring that millions of the world’s poorest and most vulnerable people have realised their dreams and ambitions since our foundation in 1977,” said GOAL Chairperson, Anne O’Leary.
“Not only was Jimmy on hand to support John O’Shea in the very early days of GOAL’s existence, but he remained with the organisation and helped it to grow, improve and ultimately reach more people – and save more lives – over the following decades.”
Aside from his commitments with GOAL, Jimmy worked on more than 25 developing world projects for various charity bodies, other NGOs and national and international governments, all of which demonstrated his unstinting generosity and compassion for his fellow man.
Jimmy will be very sadly missed by the GOAL Board and all GOAL staff both in Dublin and overseas. Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife, Maeve, his children Garrett and Deirdre, and with his wider family.

Jimmy Casey’s selfless dedication to humanitarianism and immense contribution as part of GOAL’s mission and history will not be forgotten.
