Established in 1977, GOAL is an international humanitarian agency, with a team of 3,000 personnel, dedicated to alleviating the needs of the most vulnerable communities. Currently operating in 15 of the world’s most vulnerable countries, GOAL delivers a wide range of humanitarian and development programmes, ranging from humanitarian relief in disaster situations, to focusing on nutrition, food security, and building greater resilience and sustainable livelihoods.
GOAL (international) (trading as GOAL UK) is incorporated in the UK as a company limited by guarantee without having a share capital. GOAL UK is registered with the Companies House in the United Kingdom (company registration number: 04154994) and with the Charity Commission for England and Wales (charity registration number 1107403). GOAL UK has its own independent Board of Directors that meet regularly throughout the financial year.
GOAL UK plays an important role within the GOAL Group to support fundraising efforts with the UK public and also with UK and other non-US institutional donors and also to resource GOAL Global operations from the UK market.
The Director of Development GOAL UK will manage the GOAL Global Funding and Business Development (FBD) department, reporting to the GOAL Global CEO, The FBD team is based in multiple locations, working at both country and global levels to increase and diversify non-US institutional funding to achieve impact and deliver GOAL’s organisational objectives. The team’s strategy centres on a targeted evolution of GOAL’s funding model guided by the organizations Funding & Finance Strategy. This includes maintaining existing and exploring new relationships at country, regional or global institutional level. The FBD team also pursue new market entries and scaling of new funding streams.
Job Purpose
The Director of Development GOAL UK will manage all operations by GOAL within the UK, reporting to the GOAL Global CEO and accountable to the GOAL UK Board of Directors. The role will also manage the GOAL Global Business Development Function and the development of strategic partnerships for GOAL Global.
Duties and responsibilities
Management of GOAL Operations in the UK
- Report to the GOAL UK Board of Directors in relation to GOAL operations in UK and the role of GOAL UK within the GOAL Global Group
- Coordinate all other activities with the UK Board including approval / signature for relevant legal documentation or processes, facilitating board member visits to country programmes, maintaining Board members fully briefed on aspects relating to their duty of care and other responsibilities as Board members.
- Ensure GOAL UK is fully compliant with all relevant UK legislation
- Oversee the administrative management of all GOAL UK staff
- Support relevant recruitment efforts within the UK market for staffing of GOAL Global Operations.
Business Development
- Lead GOAL’s engagement strategy with UK and other Non-US institutional donors and funding partners.
- Management of GOAL Global Funding and Business Development function including current team of 4 fulltime staff.
- Assist in positioning and networking for GOAL in the pursuit of funding and development of strategic partnerships / consortia.
- Report to the GOAL Global Senior Management Team and, when requested, to the GOAL Ireland Board in relation to GOAL institutional fundraising including funding targets, funding pipeline by donor, country, etc and overall status of GOAL funding outlook.
- Support the development of high value and / or strategic proposal submissions.
- Represent GOAL at UK and other international events relating to funding of GOAL programmes.
- Oversee the development of GOAL’s funding pipeline relating to non US institutional funding.
- Support the development of GOAL Global funding and donor engagement strategies and tracking progress on these.
- Coordinate closely with the GOAL US team in relation to developing GOAL Global overall funding portfolio at global level and also at each country of operation level.
- Oversee the FBD team in their role in supporting the development of funding strategies and funding pipelines at country level.
Strategic Partnerships
- Lead in the development of strategic partners for GOAL’s global programmes within the UK with agencies such as UK Med, START Network, and others.
- Assist in the development of strategic partnerships for GOAL in other contexts together with the Director of Programme Operations and the President of Program Design, Innovation and Business Development.
Requirements (Person Specification)
- Third Level Qualification in related field
- 10+ years’ management experience in the international aid sector
- Extensive experience working within the Aid Sector in the UK
- Prior experience in engaging and managing relations with Board of Directors and governance of UK non government organizations
- Experience leading strategic and large-scale successful bids
- Experience with UK donors including FCDO and other non US funding agencies
- Passionate about GOAL’s work in Transforming Crisis to Resilience
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
Desirable
- General understanding of wide range of technical areas related to GOAL’s programming, with ability to know when to bring in the relevant technical expert.
- Skilled in methodologies for developing and presenting Theory of Change
- Ability to facilitate design workshops / brainstorm sessions.
